Congratulations to the university’s  Spirit Eyes dragon boat team who has won the first prize in the 2021 International Concrete Dragon Boat Competition (ICDBC 2021) held in Zhejiang Province from June 13 to 14.

Supervised by Zhu Haitao, Luo Hanbing and Xie Peng, the team members are all undergraduate students from the School of Civil Engineering, including Gao Ruilong, Luo Dingkun, Lu Junjie, Wang Yixiang and Chen Haoyu.

In the competition, the participants were required to use concrete to build Chinese traditional dragon boats that would undergo speed contests, material mechanics tests and other competitive events.

The boat Spirit Eyes designed by TJU team （According to the competition regulations, the dragon boat is made of cement-based solidified materials, concrete and other optional materials. The volume ratio of concrete material is no less than 50%. It ise a real concrete dragon boat.)

The laboratory trial

With an engine and remote sensing receiving equipment installed, the competiting boats conducted straight line racing and obstacle racing under the remote control. The technical committee of the Competition evaluated each team’s technical report and their defense behaviour on technical design, and ranked the teams by their total scores.

“The participants have to master the cutting-edge new technology of concrete materials and apply them to the boat. They are also expected to have good command of interdisciplinary knowledge, structure design ability, and analysis and computation capacity. Imagination, creativity and art design ability are indispensable, too,” said one of the supervisors.

The 2021 International Concrete Dragon Boat Competition held on the Haining International Campus of Zhejiang University, was organized by the International Concrete Dragon Boat Technical Committee under the guidance of the Engineering Education Committee of China Association for Higher Education and the Civil Engineering Discipline Specialty Steering Committee in Colleges and Universities of China. The competition was also authorized and co-organized by American Concrete Association (ACI), the Second Batch of Teaching Reform Research Projects of Higher Education in Zhejiang Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan period and other professional organizations. There are representatives from Tianjin University, Southeast University, Shenzhen University, Harbin Engineering University and other well-known universities at home and abroad.
